Mawile was an experiment that I've wanted to do for probably half a year, and I finally got around to making her this summer!
I had spent maybe a week trying to design her since I found her heads to be the most complex part of her body. I sacrificed some details from her official design in order to achieve a simplified "Pokedoll" look, but I think it came out pretty well despite the "inaccuracies."
My mother and little brother actually played a huge role in putting Mawile together. While I had the patterns laid out for her, my brother
created Mawile's "hair" or "horns," sewing the teeth on too! My mother sewed most of Mawile's head, and, afterward, I embroidered the eyes on while she embroidered the yellow spot on Mawile's hair/horns.
Admittedly, I went through several frustrating phases while making Mawile's head. The head was either too cone-shaped or too spherical when I needed a blend of both to form a "beak-like" characteristic. Another huge struggle occurred while I tinkered around with how to make Mawile's black "bangs" appear correctly on the head. Though I'm not entirely satisfied with the results, I think it came out pretty damn well for being such a pain in the ass to do initially!
Another thing I learned from Mawile's design that helped me later on for Aggron was that I had to be careful on how small I made each piece. For parts that needed to be turned inside out, if they were extremely small or had narrow openings, they were quite scary to invert when the time came - mainly because I was afraid I'd rip open a seam. My little brother's a pro at inversion, so I had him do the little arms for me. XD
As for the materials involved, Mawile was made from:
--Fleece for the body
--Embroidery floss for the details (embroidered edges around eyes and white reflection in the eyes)
--Felt (used solely for the eyes: white sclera, red iris, black pupil)
--Polyfill stuffing (Her fat head contains most of the stuffing)
Mawile is around 7" tall and 8" long from beak tip to horn tp when extended. She's pretty small in comparison to her younger brother Aggron, but she's still pretty fearsome what with all her hair/horn-jaw opening action!
Fun fact 1: Mawile has some little dents at the creases of her beak, which my mother pointed at. We later affectionately named her Dimples after her facial features.
Fun fact 2: Mawile's the only plushie I've made so far with a sewing machine. This is because my family used the machine since I'm more of a fan of literal hand-sewing.
Fun fact 3: I'm a loser, and I didn't take a proper photo shoot of Mawile by herself, so this deviation shows her guiding little brother Aggron through the desert that is my backyard.
Mawile's one of my very first plushies made (technically second, but my first Pokemon plush). I've received a ton of positive responses from posting her and her younger brother Aggron on the PKMN Collectors LJ community.
As such, I've been considering taking up commissions; however, nothing's set in stone yet since I have obligations to my school and life first. But, if you're feeling particularly interested in commissioning me, feel free to drop me a line via PM and we can see what I can do for you in the nearby future.
Thanks for looking! Hope you enjoy these Steel Siblings! :3
